Facebook Marketplace is a free feature inside the Facebook app and website that lets you buy and sell items within your city. In India, it is widely used for clothing, footwear, jewellery, and home textiles, letting you deal directly with local sellers without shipping costs.

You do not need a separate account; if you have a Facebook profile, you already have access. The service is available on Android, iOS, and the desktop site, and you can switch between them anytime.

How to Open Marketplace and Set Your Location

Step 1: Open the Marketplace Tab

  • On the Facebook app, tap the three horizontal lines (menu) at the bottom right, then choose Marketplace.
  • On desktop, click Marketplace in the left-hand menu or go to facebook.com/marketplace.
  • If you do not see the option, update the app from the Play Store or App Store, or use the desktop site.

Step 2: Set Your City

  • Tap the location pin or 'Your Location' at the top and type your city name.
  • Choose the correct city from the dropdown; this is what filters nearby listings.
  • If you travel or move, change it manually each time you shop so you see the right sellers.

Finding Clothes, Shoes and Accessories

Marketplace groups items into categories such as Clothing, Shoes, Accessories, and Women's Clothing. Tap the category icon (grid of squares) to browse subcategories like sarees, Kurtis, or formal shoes.

Use Filters to Narrow Results

  • Price range: set a minimum and maximum so you do not scroll past your budget.
  • Condition: choose New, Used, or Refurbished depending on how much wear you expect.
  • Distance: slide the bar from 1 km to 50 km to decide how far you will travel for pickup.
  • Size and colour: some sellers list these in the description; scan for keywords like 'size M' or 'cream colour'.

Checking the Seller Before You Message

A good seller has a complete profile, recent activity, and positive feedback. Do not skip this step, because Marketplace is person-to-person and refunds are rare.

Red Flags to Watch

  • Profile picture is a stock image or missing entirely.
  • Account created less than a month ago with dozens of unrelated items for sale.
  • Asks you to pay via UPI to an unknown number, or to send money through a link outside Facebook.
  • Refuses to meet in a public place or insists on shipping only, without using a tracked courier.

How to Message and Bargain

Tap the item, then Message. Keep the conversation inside Facebook until you are ready to meet; this gives you a record if something goes wrong.

Sample Script

  • Hi, I am interested in your [item name]. Is it still available?
  • Can I see it in person at [public place] tomorrow at 4 pm?
  • The price is a bit high for my budget; would you accept [your offer]?

In Indian markets, bargaining is normal. Start at 70% of the asking price and settle somewhere in the middle. If the seller says no, walk away; another listing will appear.

Common Mistakes Shoppers Make

  • Paying before seeing the item. Always inspect in daylight if possible.
  • Ignoring the 'Sold' tag. If the item is marked Sold, do not message; the seller may have another copy but it is not guaranteed.
  • Using the same photo angle as the listing. Ask for a photo from the side, back, and inside label to check size and fabric.
  • Meeting at home or a secluded lane. Choose a mall entrance, metro station, or busy market road.
  • Not checking the return policy. On Marketplace, most sellers offer no returns, so confirm 'no returns' before you agree.

What to Ask the Shopkeeper

  • Is this item brand new or previously worn?
  • What is the fabric composition? (cotton, polyester, silk blend?)
  • Has it been washed or dry-cleaned? Any stains or odours?
  • What is the exact size in inches? (chest, length, waist)
  • Do you have more colours or sizes in stock?
  • Can you reduce the price if I take two items?

If the seller is a small shop owner, they may also have a FRQ online store. Ask them for their frq.in link; many shops list newer stock there that does not appear on Marketplace.

Frequently asked questions

Is Facebook Marketplace free to use in India?▼

Yes. Listing and buying on Marketplace costs nothing. Facebook does not charge a fee, and you pay the seller directly. The only cost is the item price and any transport you arrange.

How do I login to Marketplace if I already have a Facebook account?▼

You do not need a separate login. Open the Facebook app or website, sign in with your usual credentials, and tap Marketplace in the menu. If the tab is missing, update the app or use the desktop site at facebook.com/marketplace.

What is the marketplace fee in Amazon compared to Facebook?▼

Amazon charges a referral fee per sale, usually 8-15% depending on the category, plus a closing fee for some items. Facebook Marketplace charges 0% fee for individual sellers in India, which is why local shop owners often list there first.

Can I sell on Marketplace Mainstreet if I am a small shop owner?▼

Marketplace Mainstreet is a separate Facebook feature for businesses, not individuals. Small shop owners usually list items directly on Marketplace or set up a store on platforms like FRQ, which gives them their own web address and lower fees.

How do I search for marketplace bangalore listings?▼

Open Marketplace, tap the location pin, type Bangalore, and select the city. Then use the search bar to type keywords like 'saree' or 'shoes'. You can also filter by distance to see only listings within 5 km or 20 km.
